What kind of skills would you need to be a butterfly researcher? There are many kinds of activities scientists use when studying animals in their natural habitats, like observation, measurement, data recording and organization. For many kinds of animals, researchers need to learn how to identify different species.

Scientists who study butterflies need to know how to identify different species to be able to tag them and learn of their migration habits as well as their behavior.
In this activity, you will identify the different stages of a butterflies’ life cycle to identify the species. The skills you will develop in this activity are the same ones the butterfly researchers use every day!

Objectives:
  • I can match photos of the life stages of a butterfly to the correct butterfly species.
  • I can describe the identification markers that are used by scientists.
  • I can design ways to use the skills in this activity to study other species of animals.

Instructions:

To play the Royal Butterfly Family Card Game, you need to download and print the cards. Click on the link below to download a PDF that you can print. For the best results, print the cards 2-SIDED, and in color.  We recommend you use card stock.  Then cut out the cards - follow the dark lines on the front of the card. (This trims off a small bit of the background on the back of the card.)

Then you can download the Teacher and Student handouts that have instructions and activity plan ideas, including objectives, standards, and background information about butterfly life cycles.

Printable Cards - PDF format  - print in color, 2-sided, then cut and trim!

Teacher Handout - Activity plan, objectives, standards and more!
Student Handout - Instructions, Identification Record Sheet and Reflection Questions!

To play the game, sort the cards into three sets that include ALL FOUR stages of a butterfly life cycle - Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult!

The last card in the set has brief instructions and an answer key.
