The 2022 Central America Series Team

The Central America Series will soon have FOUR new books, expected to be published in May or June of 2022, about Sloths and Macaws. Each title will be published in both English and in Spanish! Our partners include researchers at The Sloth Institute and the Macaw Recovery Network, both of which are based in Costa Rica. Watch for updates here!

Meet our team who helped create the books!

Brooke Ackerman is  currently a junior in the Ball State photography program! "I love all things animals and am super excited for my first year with Conservation Tales and the team! I’m proud to be one of two photographers who were able to help make these books possible. Happy reading!"

Sunnie Berning is a Visual Communications major at Ball State University. Sunnie's favorite part about being on the team is getting to work alongside the other students with different roles.

Picture
Cydney Davidson  is a junior Biological Anthropology and Drawing dual degree student at Ball State. She loves both art and science equally and plans to go to grad school before beginning a career in forensic anthropology.

Abbey Jessup is a senior at Ball State studying photography. She has been with Conservation Tales for three years and will be working on the sloth book for 2022. She is excited to be working with the team again and see her work being used to help animal conservation.

Sara Misak is a senior studying Visual Communication and Biology. She is the Lead Graphic Designer and worked with the Sloth team this semester. Inspired by the work Conservation Tales does to promote wildlife conservation, she is creating sculptures of both a three-toed and two-toed sloth for her Creative Honors Thesis.

Ashley Owens is the co-author of the Sloth book and studies Life Science Education at Ball State. She is a part of the Honors college. She worked on the monarch butterfly book as a co-author and did Monarch illustrations. She created the monarch butterfly family card game that was presented at the 50th HASTI conference.

Kami Geron is one of the illustrators and designers for the Macaw book. She is a double major in studio art and mass communications at Ball State University. She is excited to be a part of the team for the next several years as she pursues her master’s degree in Emerging Media Design and Development in 2023.

Picture
Allison Smiley is an illustrator for the Macaw book. This is her second year on the team. She is majoring in Drawing working to get her BFA at Ball State University.

Picture
Karina Kasmauskis is a double major in Landscape Architecture and Spanish. She enjoyed being involved in such a diverse project in which she was able to explore environmental systems and conservation from both a biological and artistic perspective. She was excited to apply her Spanish toward a project that would make the story and art more widely accessible. She had so much fun learning and collaborating with so many interesting people outside of her majors!

Picture
Laine Powell is an animation major at Ball State University. They developed the characters for the Macaw book. Laine currently is a self-employed illustrator and has a love for animals.

Picture
Rhiannon Morrison-Naylor  is a senior Animation major at Ball State University. She is creating the characters for the Sloth book. Rhiannon has been a team leader in a project to produce an animated short film, and brings her digital art skills to the project.
