You probably know what a sea horse looks like, but did you know there are nearly 50 different species of seahorses around the world? Several of those species have only recently been discovered. They can be found in many different sizes and colors. Some have strange and beautiful shapes to help them blend into their habitat.

Seahorse populations have declined in many areas. This is sometimes due to pollution in their environments. But the aquarium trade is also a threat to seahorse populations.

Come find out more about seahorse conservation and the ways scientists are trying new ways to breed seahorses to protect wild populations!

Conservation Tales: Seahorses  - COMING SOON!

Featured Activity - iSeahorse - This citizen science site lets you report your own seahorse sightings on an international database. Scientists use the data to understand seahorse populations!

Other Activities
  • Inquire with iSeahorse - You are the scientist! Make predictions about seahorse habitats or compare species. Then use data from iSeahorse to test your predictions.
  • Shopping for Seahorses - Your choices at the grocery store can impact seahorses. The Marine Stewardship Council has a website to help you find out which fish products are caught or raised in ways that protect other species like seahorses. Download the activity to do learn more, and to find out what products your local store carries.
  • Seahorse Sink or Swim - Build a model of a seahorse - or at least its swim bladder, to observe how seahorses control their ability to sink, float and hover in the water. A hands-on activity you can do at home or at school!
